As part of a growing and agile Environmental Planning team, we are seeking a Principal/Associate Technical Director with a strong track record in leading environmental and consenting aspects of projects, particularly within the Design and Build sector. Your expertise in environmental management, technical or sustainability specialisms will support projects involving protected species, pollution control, surface water and materials management, air quality, or noise.

You will work on diverse projects including large-scale energy and infrastructure, rail, highways, water, mixed-use developments, public realm, and masterplanning schemes for both private and public clients. This role requires driving technical excellence, promoting flexible and collaborative working environments, and leveraging digital innovation to deliver multidisciplinary projects across the UK and worldwide.

Key responsibilities include leading coordination and delivery of planning and environmental work by multi-disciplinary teams, influencing project development to achieve optimal environmental and planning outcomes with a strong understanding of the Design & Build process. You will also focus on business development by creating project opportunities and leading delivery to expand our portfolio in the Design & Build sector, while collaborating closely with upstream Environmental and Planning teams.

Engagement with consultees, stakeholders, and key clients is essential, as is managing projects to ensure technical quality, commercial performance, and health and safety standards. You will work closely with colleagues across Arcadis’ global business to deliver impactful and sustainable solutions for future generations.

Requirements

Experience
- Excellent working knowledge of environmental and consenting processes, including EIA practices, procedures, and relevant case law
- Strong understanding of environmental and sustainability principles and technical specialisms
- Proven experience working with contractors and influencing sustainability through design
- Experience across a variety of project types
- Strong report writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills, with experience reviewing others’ work to ensure quality
- Demonstrated ability in multi-disciplinary coordination and leadership of projects, with solid project management and technical skills
- Experience consulting and negotiating with planning authorities, regulators, and stakeholders
- Commercial expertise including forecasting, project management, and quality assurance

Qualifications
- Relevant degree or equivalent qualification
