About the Role
Allye Energy is revolutionising the energy storage sector with cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) built using repurposed EV batteries. We are expanding our capabilities to integrate DC fast charging technology with our battery energy storage systems, creating a comprehensive energy ecosystem for the future of clean mobility and energy storage.
We are seeking an engineer to lead the systems engineering, software integration and technical delivery of DC fast charging capability across Allye's energy storage products. The central challenge is delivering a product that performs safely and predictably across a large population of electric vehicles and off-highway machinery. This role requires interoperability, validation, and disciplined systems thinking, supported by substantial hands-on software capability and sufficient depth in high voltage hardware to specify, direct and challenge suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the architecture of the charging system, from the DC bus and power conversion interface through to the vehicle coupler, including control and communications architecture.
- Define requirements and interface specifications for internal teams and external suppliers.
- Lead build, buy and partner decisions on charge controllers, protocol stacks and test equipment.
- Lead software integration for charging, working hands-on with embedded controls and application software teams.
- Implement, integrate and debug charging communication stacks and control layers.
- Develop tooling and automation for test execution, log capture and fault analysis.
- Own interoperability strategy, test and validation capabilities, including vehicle and charger simulation.
- Diagnose faults at protocol and physical layers and manage field return and failure investigations.
- Specify physical charging interface and DC side protection and isolation strategies.
- Own the safety case for DC charging including hazard analysis and emergency stop behaviour.
- Ensure product conformity with relevant UK and European standards for DC charging, electrical safety, EMC and functional safety.
- Support product conformity assessment and manage relationships with certification bodies.
- Act as Allye's technical authority on charging, providing guidance to colleagues, partners and customers.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation including specifications, integration guidance and service material.
- Support commercial, product and field teams with technical input for customer requirements, deployment and after sales.
This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of sustainable energy and clean mobility technology in a dynamic and innovative environment.
Experience
- Degree in electrical, electronic, control, software or systems engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
- Five to eight years of relevant engineering experience including demonstrable technical ownership.
- Direct experience of DC charging systems on vehicle or charging equipment side, taken through to production.
- Proven ability to resolve interoperability faults between independently developed systems.
- Practical competence in design, integration and safe operation of high voltage DC systems.
Technical Skills
- Working knowledge of DC charging standards, communication protocols, coupler and connector standards.
- Proficiency in embedded software development in C or C++ and scripting languages such as Python.
- Competence with industrial and automotive communication protocols, IP networking and diagnostic tooling.
- Structured approach to requirements, verification and test with evidence-based outcomes.
- Experience with version control, code review and collaborative software development.
Behaviours
- Systems thinking with ability to balance electrical, software, mechanical and regulatory considerations.
- Technical authority combined with accessibility to explain complex topics clearly.
- Autonomy and ownership, comfortable operating with limited precedent.
- Rigour and candour in assessing product capabilities.
- Practical disposition with willingness to work hands-on with hardware and vehicles.
Desirable
- Experience with remote management protocols for charging equipment.
- Experience in off-highway, heavy vehicle or industrial electrification.
- Background in battery management, energy storage or energy management systems.
- Experience with bidirectional charging or vehicle-to-grid applications.
- Knowledge of product conformity and certification for electrical equipment.
- Understanding of cyber security and certificate management for connected charging equipment.
- Participation in industry standards or interoperability bodies.
- Experience in early stage or scaling engineering organisations.
