About the Role
Palé Hall offers a rare opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic Gardener to care for several acres of formal garden, parkland, wooded areas, and a walled garden. The gardens team is responsible for the planned and day-to-day maintenance of the property grounds, including the glasshouse, polytunnel, and associated areas. The successful candidate will carry out routine and seasonal horticultural tasks to maintain the gardens to the highest standards. With an extensive landscaping project planned and significant investment underway, Palé Hall is an exciting place to develop your career.
Main duties include working across woodland, pond, walkways, gravel areas, orchard, polytunnel, glasshouse, walled garden, drives, borders, lawns, courtyard, plant containers, and hanging baskets. Responsibilities also include hot tub cleaning and water monitoring. The role supports the Head Grower in creating and adhering to a matrix of routine and seasonal tasks and helps develop and maintain a diverse kitchen garden producing seasonal herbs, vegetables, and edible flowers in liaison with the Head Chef.
Routine tasks include weeding, pruning, mowing, digging, bonfire supervision, leaf blowing, watering, sowing, harvesting, salting, and plant feeding. The role requires a keen interest in wildlife conservation and implementing initiatives to support wildlife welfare within the Palé estate. Additional responsibilities include administering appropriate fertiliser, undertaking pruning according to species and conditions, monitoring soil conditions and improving soil structure, managing temperatures with appropriate measures, and identifying and managing plant pests and diseases.
Experience
Proven practical experience and good knowledge of horticulture applied through the seasons. Ideally some experience maintaining a diverse walled garden producing seasonal herbs, vegetables, and edible flowers for kitchen use. Knowledge of trees, their species, conditions, and their impact on the estate is desirable.
