About the Role
Birmingham City Football Club is undergoing an exciting period of growth and modernisation, playing a key role in the transformation of England’s second city as part of the Sports Quarter project. We are seeking a passionate and experienced Groundskeeper to join our Groundskeeping team and contribute to maintaining the highest professional standards of our playing surfaces.
The Grounds team is responsible for the maintenance and preparation of pitches and surrounding areas, working closely with football operations, coaching staff, and external contractors to ensure match-ready surfaces throughout the season. Operating in a fast-paced elite sporting environment, the team combines technical expertise, precision planning, and a strong work ethic.
As a Groundskeeper, you will work alongside experienced staff receiving hands-on training and development in sports turf management and horticulture. Your duties will include mowing, marking out, divotting, fertilising, and general pitch maintenance. You will assist with the upkeep of training pitches, agility areas, landscaped grounds, the 3G artificial pitch, and indoor playing surfaces at Wast Hills Training Ground. Additional responsibilities include preparing pitches for training sessions and fixtures, maintaining landscaped areas such as trees, shrubs, flowers, and banks, and operating groundskeeping equipment and machinery under supervision.
You will also attend relevant training courses and qualifications as required by the Club and adhere to all Health & Safety procedures and Club policies at all times.
Experience
Previous experience in sports turf or grounds maintenance is desirable but not essential. Knowledge of groundskeeping machinery, equipment, herbicides, pesticides, and turf management practices is advantageous.
About you
You will have a genuine passion for horticulture, sports turf, and outdoor work. A positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn are essential. You should enjoy working as part of a team and take pride in maintaining high standards. Physical capability to carry out manual tasks and operate groundskeeping equipment in all weather conditions is required. Excellent communication, organisation, and time management skills are important, along with flexibility to meet the demands of a professional football environment.
Qualifications
You should be willing to study towards an NVQ Level 1 Diploma in Work-Based Horticulture/Sports Turf or equivalent qualifications. Basic Microsoft Office skills are desirable.
