About the Role
The Environment Agency is committed to protecting and enhancing the environment, with a focus on creating a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for people and wildlife. Water is central to all we do, supporting drinking, washing, recreation, industry, and health. As water becomes an increasingly scarce resource, protecting it is more important than ever. We are seeking a Groundwater Protection Officer to join our Solent and South Downs Area Groundwater, Hydrology and Contaminated Land Team. This role is vital in safeguarding groundwater quality and driving improvements. You will provide technical advice, coordinate activities, manage data, and support regulation and statutory responsibilities including the Water Framework Directive. This busy and varied role involves managing the groundwater quality monitoring programme, developing it to address local risks and health and safety concerns, analysing and reporting data to identify trends and risks, supporting planning and permitting consultations, and responding to enquiries and incidents. You will build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and play an active role in incident response, supported by full training and alternative working arrangements. This role offers a supportive and inclusive culture, career development opportunities, and a comprehensive benefits package including a generous pension scheme, overtime opportunities, paid environmental outcome days, and flexible working options.
Experience
- Professional experience and/or studies related to groundwater, hydrogeology, or groundwater chemistry.
- Awareness of groundwater quality issues and relevant environmental legislation.
- Desirable: Experience producing, analysing, and presenting environmental data to develop evidence and solve technical issues.
- Desirable: Experience undertaking hydrogeological risk assessments and project management.
- Good IT skills, including use of spreadsheets, databases, and GIS mapping systems.
- Good organisational skills with the ability to plan, track, deliver, and evaluate work to meet standards and deadlines.
About you
- A practical problem solver who can articulate solutions clearly and persuasively.
- An effective communicator, able to present clear, well-reasoned arguments to diverse audiences.
- Able to work collaboratively and influence workstreams to secure water quality outcomes.
- Enthusiastic about protecting the environment and developing your technical and project management skills.
Qualifications
- A degree in a relevant environmental discipline such as geology, hydrogeology, or environmental science with a hydrogeology focus.
