About the Role
The NHS published “Delivering a Net Zero NHS” in 2020 to outline the strategy for achieving net zero carbon emissions, which became statutory guidance in 2022. Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH) has recently updated its Green Plan, setting out environmental goals for the next five years and beyond. As Group Deputy Head of Sustainability, you will play a central role in implementing this plan by providing expert advice and guidance on sustainability across the Trust.

You will lead the delivery and ongoing development of a robust and credible sustainability programme, enabling the Group to meet and where possible exceed its obligations on carbon reduction, climate resilience, and Net Zero targets. Working within a small team of energy and sustainability specialists, you will embed sustainable practices and climate adaptation measures across all areas of the organisation in response to a changing climate.

This role is group-wide, supporting both Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust in achieving their sustainability objectives.

Key responsibilities include supporting the Group Associate Director of Sustainability to monitor and deliver the Green Plan aligned with NHS Net Zero Building Standard, Greener NHS policy, and statutory regulations; deputising at internal and external meetings representing the Group with confidence and credibility; leading sustainability programmes across estates, facilities, procurement, supply chain, travel, transport, medicines, clinical practice, waste, and digital sectors; partnering with clinical, operational, and corporate teams to embed sustainable practices; managing emissions data and producing accurate, timely reports for committees, boards, regulators, and national NHS returns; identifying, developing, and securing funding; building robust business cases demonstrating financial, environmental, and health benefits; and leading, developing, and motivating multidisciplinary teams across the Group.

The Humber Health Partnership is one of the largest acute and community NHS partnerships, serving over 1.65 million people with nearly 20,000 staff across five main hospital sites. As teaching hospitals affiliated with Hull York Medical School, the partnership contributes to research in multiple medical fields. The organisation is committed to developing a diverse, inclusive, innovative, skilled, and caring workforce to deliver excellent care and a sustainable future.

Requirements

Experience
Proven experience in sustainability, environmental management, estates, or strategic change roles, ideally within the NHS. Demonstrated track record of delivering large-scale change and measurable carbon reductions. Knowledge of the Greener NHS programme, net zero policy, carbon accounting, and climate legislation.

About you
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), negotiation, presentation, and data analysis abilities tailored for non-specialist audiences. Collaborative leadership style that builds trust from frontline teams to board level. Committed to NHS values and passionate about the link between sustainability and population health.

Qualifications
Relevant qualifications or equivalent experience in sustainability, environmental science, or related fields are desirable. Commitment to continuous professional development and staying current with NHS sustainability policies and legislation.
