About the Role
The Wildlife Trusts are a grassroots movement of people from diverse backgrounds united by a shared belief in the importance of nature. With over 945,000 members, 33,000 volunteers, 4,100 staff, and 600 trustees, the federation of 47 independent Wildlife Trust charities works locally and nationally to protect and restore wildlife and habitats. The next few years are critical for reversing wildlife loss and driving nature’s recovery at scale, requiring bold changes in how we mobilise communities and influence change.
As Head of Media Relations, you will lead a skilled media team that shapes the public conversation about nature through compelling, authoritative stories across broadcast, print, and online national media. You will help maintain and grow The Wildlife Trusts’ high-profile presence on flagship programmes such as BBC Countryfile, Springwatch, ITV News, and BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, ensuring our message drives awareness and meaningful action on nature and climate crises.
This role demands strategic and operational leadership to strengthen our national media profile, identify new opportunities, and ensure our messaging cuts through in a fast-paced, high-profile environment. You will guide the team in responding to government policy, championing bold solutions for nature’s recovery, and spotlighting impactful work across diverse issues including peatland restoration, mental health benefits of nature, and marine conservation.
Experience
Proven track record as a credible media professional with extensive experience leading and supporting high-performing teams in fast-paced, high-profile environments. Expert knowledge of the media landscape with a wide network of trusted media relationships used thoughtfully to achieve impact. Skilled in managing complex or high-stakes situations with sound judgement and decisiveness. Substantial experience in reputation management, including advising senior leaders and stakeholders on sensitive or contentious issues.
About you
Confident in developing and placing both softer news stories and managing high-pressure media scenarios. Passionate about using media to inform, engage, and drive positive change. Understanding of UK wildlife and nature recovery issues is highly desirable. Strategic thinker with strong leadership skills and a commitment to advancing nature’s recovery through effective communication.
Qualifications
Not explicitly stated but relevant media, communications, or related qualifications and demonstrable experience are expected for this senior role.
