About the Role
Building a sustainable tomorrow, BAM UK & Ireland offers an exciting leadership opportunity as Head of Sustainability, reporting to the Environmental Sustainability Director. This role focuses on supporting the Transport Sector to develop and drive sustainability within their core strategic functions. As a key member of the Environmental Sustainability Senior Leadership Team, you will connect operational strategy to UK&I enabling services and be accountable for strategic actions alongside operational priorities.
You will lead and support a team of Environmental Sustainability specialists covering whole-life carbon, BREEAM, nature, and adaptation, ensuring talent and capability align with segment and contractual needs. The role involves developing client and market insights to maintain BAM’s competitive edge, working closely with key client account leads, and leading strategic work-winning and tender activities.
Responsibilities include setting environmental sustainability operational targets with leadership teams, monitoring performance, coordinating industry insights and policy developments, managing team resourcing, and fostering collaboration across cross-functional teams. You will champion best practices, promote innovation, and support continuous improvement through training, webinars, and workshops.
This role requires frequent travel and hybrid working, demanding excellent communication skills, strategic leadership, and a passion for sustainability within construction to deliver excellence and drive continuous improvement.
Experience
- Proven leadership experience in similar organisations (private and/or public sector).
- Strong technical knowledge across Environmental Sustainability with emphasis on whole-life carbon, nature, and resilience.
- Experience managing multiple dispersed teams, preferably in a matrix organisation.
- Knowledge of key transport clients and assets, including Transport Authorities (TfL), Network Rail, HS2, Crossrail, EastWest Rail.
- Experience working with and influencing senior stakeholders internally and externally.
- Demonstrated success in bidding and work-winning environments.
- Strong influencing, networking, and profile-raising capabilities within the sector.
