About the Role
The successful candidate will be the qualified Health & Safety leader, providing on-site H&S expertise and managing the Safety Management System to maintain a safe working environment and culture. You will also be responsible for developing and managing the Environmental Management System within the site. Key responsibilities include managing the current SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) management systems to ensure compliance with legal requirements, leading the Instron SHE Committee, and developing improved SHE policies, procedures, and work instructions in collaboration with managers and senior leadership. You will ensure detailed risk assessments are carried out, reviewed, and maintained across all areas, processes, and substances, and provide training on conducting suitable assessments. Working closely with management, you will identify, deliver, and evaluate SHE training needs for all employee levels. Monitoring the effectiveness of SHE management systems through audits, providing SHE advice on site projects and processes, investigating accidents and incidents, and reporting under RIDDOR regulations are key elements of the role. You will champion continuous improvement in safety culture, represent the organisation with external agencies such as the Health and Safety Executive and Environment Agency, and monitor hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal to ensure legal compliance. Additionally, you will manage Fire Safety across the site, liaising with department managers to ensure adherence to risk assessments, and provide SHE support to the Field-Based Organisation including site visits and risk assessments for vehicles.
Experience
- Proven experience managing SHE within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
- Excellent knowledge of SHE legislation and experience as a H&S Competent Person.
- Strong understanding of H&S principles, legislation, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
- Experience designing, delivering, and evaluating SHE training and coaching for all staff levels.
- Strong project management skills with accountability for follow-up actions.
- Ability to motivate and engage people at all levels to prioritise SHE issues.
- Effective communication skills to relate to people inside and outside the organisation.

Qualifications
- NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent qualification.
- An appropriate Environmental qualification is desirable.
