About the Role
Reporting to the Network Manager, you will manage a section of the high voltage distribution network within Network Operations and Control. Your responsibilities include maintaining an overview of network security and availability, ensuring compliance with Distribution Safety Rules and other critical procedures for the safe operation of a high voltage system. You will provide advice, instruction, and remotely operate the system to ensure UK Power Networks delivers a safe and rapid response to faults and unplanned situations. You will also check and authorise planned operations on the network and supply important data to ensure compliance with licence conditions.
Network Control operates 24 hours a day, monitoring and operating the network continuously. This role is vital in helping UK Power Networks meet its regulatory targets. You will work within a team environment and be authorised across all three licence areas, with opportunities to progress onto EHV control for qualified individuals with a strong track record.
Key responsibilities include managing the distribution network using SCADA and other systems, rapid restoration of supply during faults, providing technical advice, sanctioning safety documents, complying with fault reporting requirements, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives. You will mentor other control team members and contribute to minimising Customer Minutes Lost (CMLs) and Customer Interruptions (CIs) to help deliver a high Broad Measure of Customer Service (BMoCS) score.
Experience
Experience working on or around high voltage systems as an Authorised Person or Senior Authorised Person is desirable. Alternatively, experience as a Control Engineer on electricity distribution systems is beneficial. Familiarity with Distribution Safety Rules, electrical safety procedures, and managing safe working practices is important. Knowledge of the regulatory environment and safety documents used within the industry is also required.
About you
You will have a strong focus on safety and customer service, with the ability to process information quickly and make prompt, correct decisions following procedures. You must be able to manage multiple faults and planned outages simultaneously and communicate technical and safety information clearly to Field Engineers during high-profile incidents. Competent IT skills and the ability to work effectively within a team environment are essential.
Qualifications
A minimum of an ONC or equivalent qualification is required. An HNC is desirable. You must demonstrate the ability to work safely and comply with all relevant safety rules, instructions, and codes of practice.
