About the Role
The Environment Agency is committed to protecting and enhancing the environment, aiming to create a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for people and wildlife. Water is central to all we do, supporting drinking, washing, recreation, industry, and health. As water becomes increasingly scarce, protecting this precious resource is more important than ever. In Hertfordshire and North London, managing water resources is a challenging and vital task. Groundwater management within the Chalk Aquifer is essential for providing drinking water and sustaining Chalk Rivers, while other aquifers such as the Thames gravels and Lower Greensand also contribute significantly to the area's water supply.

We are seeking a Hydrogeological Officer to join our Hertfordshire & North London Area Groundwater & Hydrology Team. You will provide technical hydrogeological support to hydrology and water resource planning colleagues, assisting in the development of water resource strategies and contributing to long-term abstraction licensing and regulatory decisions. You will engage with external customers, including infrastructure developers and consultants, helping to shape water management and regulation to meet future demands while protecting groundwater and river environments.

Your work will include determining groundwater abstraction licensing proposals, contributing hydrogeological expertise to catchment-based water management plans, supporting internal teams, and responding to external enquiries for hydrogeological data. This role is office-based in Welwyn Garden City with occasional external meetings, training, and site visits. You will also have an incident response role, requiring availability to support during incidents with full training and potential additional payment.

Benefits
- A generous pension scheme of 19%
- Overtime opportunities through standby and incident pay
- 25 days holiday plus 8 bank holidays for full-time employees
- Two additional paid environmental outcome days for community activities
- Great career development opportunities
- Maternity, paternity, and adoption leave schemes
- Flexible and/or part-time working options considered on a case-by-case basis

Requirements

Experience
- Experience working in the hydrogeological or engineering geological field
- Ability to design pumping tests and analyse/evaluate the data

About you
- Good organisational skills with the ability to plan, track, deliver, and evaluate work to meet standards and deadlines
- Ability to work collaboratively and influence workstreams to secure water resource outcomes
- Comfortable working effectively within a dispersed team environment
- Knowledge of water resource management and understanding of the water industry is desirable

Qualifications
- A degree in geology, hydrogeology, or a relevant environmental science with a hydrogeology bias
- Ability to analyse hydrogeological technical data using analytical or numerical models is desirable
