About the Role
The Environment Agency is committed to protecting and enhancing the environment to create a cleaner, safer, and healthier world for people and wildlife. Water is central to all we do, supporting drinking, washing, recreation, industry, and health. As water becomes an increasingly scarce resource, effective management and protection are essential. In Hertfordshire and North London, managing groundwater within the Chalk Aquifer and other aquifers such as the Thames gravels and Lower Greensand is vital to ensure sustainable water supply for consumers and the environment.

We are seeking a Hydrogeological Officer to join our Hertfordshire & North London Area Groundwater & Hydrology Team. In this role, you will provide technical hydrogeological support to hydrology and water resource planning colleagues, contributing to the development of water resource strategies and long-term abstraction licensing decisions. You will engage with external customers, including infrastructure developers and consultants, to help shape water management and regulation that balances future water demands with environmental protection.

Your responsibilities will include providing hydrogeological input on groundwater resource workstreams such as abstraction licensing proposals, catchment-based water management plans, and responding to enquiries for hydrogeological data. This role involves office-based work in Welwyn Garden City, with occasional external meetings, training, site visits, and collaboration with colleagues across the Environment Agency.

Responding to incidents is a key part of this role. You will have an incident role requiring availability to support incident response or business continuity, with full training and potential additional payment.

Join us and contribute to tackling the challenges of a changing climate while building a sustainable future.

- Ability to work collaboratively within a dispersed team and influence workstreams to secure water resource outcomes.
- Good communication skills to engage with internal teams and external customers.
- Commitment to environmental protection and sustainable water management.

Qualifications
- Desirable: Experience analysing hydrogeological technical data using analytical or numerical models.
- Knowledge of water resource management and understanding of the water industry.
- Flexibility to undertake an incident role and respond to emergencies as required.
