About the Role
The Environment Agency plays a vital role in protecting and enhancing the environment, focusing on creating a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for people and wildlife. Water resources are central to this mission, supporting drinking, washing, recreation, industry, and health. As a Hydrology Technical Officer within the National Water Resources Hydrology team, you will monitor and assess the water environment, applying best practice techniques to support scientifically sound, cost-efficient operational and strategic decisions. This early to mid-career role offers the opportunity to deepen your understanding of hydrological data and techniques, develop technical leadership skills, and contribute to positive environmental outcomes. You will provide hydrological analysis and data, assist with technical assessments and professional advice, support dry weather incident response, and manage national datasets. Working collaboratively with the wider hydrological community and internal teams, your work will inform decision making and help protect and improve the environment. The role involves flexible working arrangements with occasional travel for team meetings.

Benefits
- Generous pension scheme of 19%
- Overtime opportunities through standby and incident pay
- 25 days holiday plus 8 bank holidays for full-time employees
- Two additional paid environmental outcome days to participate in community activities
- Structured training programme and professional development opportunities
- Potential to enhance knowledge through apprenticeships
- Maternity, paternity, and adoption leave schemes
- Flexible and part-time working options considered on a case-by-case basis

- Experience in an operational water resources hydrology role or equivalent hydrology-focused postgraduate qualification is desirable
- Experience analysing data and information to solve problems, with good numerical and computer literacy
- Experience communicating technical information to non-technical audiences is advantageous
- Experience with programming languages such as R or Python, or PowerApps is desirable

About you
- Enthusiastic about hydrology with an awareness of hydrological concepts including processes, catchment behaviour, and types of hydrological data (rainfall, river flow, groundwater levels)
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to plan, track, and deliver work to required timescales and standards
- Good written and spoken communication skills
- Desire to learn and continually develop skills and knowledge
- Willingness to respond to incidents as part of an incident role, with full training and support provided

Qualifications
- Qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline such as Geography, Environmental Science, Physics, Maths, Data Science, Geosciences, Engineering, or Biology
