About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen at Capel Manor College for an enthusiastic, skilled and knowledgeable Lecturer in Horticulture to deliver high-quality teaching and learning across our Horticulture and Garden Design programmes. The successful candidate will have a strong practical horticultural background and be confident in demonstrating, teaching and assessing a wide range of industry-relevant skills including pruning and plant maintenance, soil preparation and cultivation, planting, plant identification and selection, propagation, and the establishment and maintenance of planted areas. You will be competent in the safe operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery and equipment such as mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers and rotavators. A sound understanding of garden design principles, sustainable horticultural practices and professional industry standards is essential.
The post holder will deliver and assess across Levels 1 to 3, ensuring students develop the practical skills, technical knowledge and professional behaviours required to succeed within the horticultural industry. Responsibilities include planning and delivering stimulating practical and classroom-based lessons, setting challenging but achievable learning goals, assessing student progress and providing constructive feedback to support continuous improvement. You will work closely with Practical Instructors and Technicians to coordinate practical learning activities, maintain high standards of horticultural practice and ensure all health and safety requirements are met.
Capel Manor College is London’s environmental college, playing a vital role in the green agenda by equipping the next generation of land-based sector workers with the skills and knowledge needed to preserve and protect London’s wildlife, national parks and green spaces. We are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment that builds confidence, encourages curiosity and develops practical competence.
Experience
Substantial practical horticultural experience is required. Experience in teaching or training is desirable but not essential as the college is willing to support the right candidate in achieving a teaching qualification. Industry experience, practical competence and the ability to communicate knowledge effectively are particularly important.
About you
You are enthusiastic, passionate about plants and gardens, and enjoy working outdoors. You have excellent communication skills and the ability to inspire and engage students with varying levels of experience and ability. You take pride in sharing your knowledge and skills, creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment that encourages curiosity and confidence.
Qualifications
Ideally, you will hold a teaching qualification at Degree or HND level and a relevant qualification at Level 3 or above in Horticulture. However, applications are welcome from skilled horticultural professionals looking to move into teaching, with support available to obtain teaching qualifications.
