About the Role
The National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme (NHMP) is a collaborative project involving the People's Trust for Endangered Species (PTES), British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS), Nottingham Trent University, Zoological Society of London (ZSL), London HogWatch, MammalWeb and the University of Durham. The NHMP Officer will coordinate this nationwide hedgehog survey, which engages citizen scientists to deploy camera traps and use AI models to estimate population densities of hedgehogs and co-occurring mammals. Running for three years, the NHMP has 15 volunteer hubs across England, Scotland and Wales, which in 2025 surveyed 53 sites across diverse habitats, generating hundreds of thousands of image sequences uploaded to MammalWeb, a bespoke online platform for mammal camera trap images.

The NHMP Officer will liaise with and support volunteer hubs, ensuring they have the necessary skills and equipment to conduct field surveys. Responsibilities include engaging with volunteers, delivering talks to participants and the public, and providing refresher training or supporting new hub establishment where needed. The role also involves recruiting and engaging ‘Spotters’—volunteers who identify species from images remotely. Thousands of Spotters are needed to assist with image identification.

Key duties include arranging Steering Group meetings, maintaining equipment databases, mapping camera trap locations, managing the NHMP GIS project, collaborating with ZSL on data pipelines and population estimates, working with MammalWeb to support Spotters, producing newsletters and quarterly reports, managing project web pages and budget, and supporting funding applications. The NHMP Officer will report to the Conservation Research and Strategy Manager and work closely with the Development Officer and Conservation Team.

This role represents both PTES and BHPS and requires close collaboration with all project partners, volunteer groups and funding organisations.
