We are seeking a Principal Civil Engineer to join our Liveable Places team. This senior role involves leading the technical delivery of flagship highways and public realm projects across London, focusing on designing high-quality highways, active travel, and public realm schemes that create safer, greener, and more inclusive streets and places. The role is hands-on and balances project management, design leadership, assurance, and mentoring, while working closely with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
Key responsibilities include leading multiple sustainable transport and public realm projects from concept and business case development through detailed design and on-site implementation; providing technical oversight and quality assurance across highways, public realm and transport projects; coordinating multi-disciplinary design packages including Lighting, Electrical, Hostile Vehicle Mitigation, Structures and Sustainable Drainage Systems; liaising with Principal Contractors during design development and construction; reviewing and approving designs, reports and technical deliverables; ensuring compliance with standards, client requirements and best practice; mentoring junior engineers and graduates; supporting framework opportunities, fee proposals and bid submissions; and identifying opportunities for repeat work and account growth.
About the Liveable Places Team: WSP's Liveable Places team works with a wide range of local authority and private clients across the UK to help achieve their placemaking ambitions. The team delivers a variety of schemes including public realm, active travel, traffic engineering, road safety, parking, traffic signals and pedestrian/traffic modelling. Experience
Proven experience delivering public realm, active travel or transport schemes in complex urban environments, particularly in London. Strong expertise in UK highways and public realm detailed design. Confident working with standards such as MfS, DMRB, TSRGD and LTN guidance. Demonstrated ability to manage project programmes, budgets, cost control and financial reporting across multiple live projects.

Qualifications
Relevant civil engineering qualifications and professional accreditation are expected. A commitment to continuous professional development and mentoring junior staff is essential.
