About the Role
Ethos Environmental Planning Ltd is seeking an experienced Principal Ecologist to establish and lead a new regional office in the South-East of England. This senior leadership role offers the opportunity to build and grow a team from the ground up, supported by the resources and stability of an established consultancy within the Celnor Group. You will have genuine influence over technical standards, project delivery, and staff development while contributing to meaningful ecological outcomes across the region.
Ethos is a trusted ecological consultancy based in Bath, delivering multi-disciplinary planning advice with a focus on ecology, green infrastructure, and biodiversity net gain. As Principal Ecologist, you will be part of the Ethos Management Team, shaping the future of the new office and supporting the company’s growth.
Key responsibilities include leading UK habitat and protected species surveys, delivering ecological supervision, managing complex ecological projects, preparing and reviewing ecological assessments and reports, and supporting business growth through recruitment, mentoring, and operational management. This role offers flexible and hybrid working, a discretionary 9-day fortnight, and a supportive environment with access to training and development opportunities.
Experience
- Minimum 6 years’ experience in ecological consultancy
- Proven experience managing complex surveys and projects
- Strong field identification skills
- At least one protected species licence
- Experience writing and quality assuring complex ecological reports
- Strong understanding of relevant legislation and policy

- Full CIEEM membership or equivalent professional accreditation
- Excellent communication, leadership, and mentoring skills
- Initiative, enthusiasm, and commitment to continuing professional development (CPD)
- Ability to manage workload independently and work collaboratively within a team
- Full UK driving licence
