Project Officer - Engagement & Communications

Location
North West Highlands. The successful candidate will need to be based in the Northwest Highlands and/or able to travel within the project area as required by the role.
Hours
Full Time - 3-year fixed-term contract, subject to a 5-month probationary period.
Salary
£27,000 per annum, plus employer pension contribution and applicable employment benefits.
About the Role
The Blue Hope Alliance (BHA) is a cross-sector volunteer citizen science survey collaboration between marine stakeholders and community groups in the North West Highlands, supporting better management of underwater ecosystems. This three-year project, "Scotland’s Hidden Reefs: Saving Maerl, Herring and Underwater Ecosystems through Citizen Science, Advocacy and Storytelling," is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The Project Officer will manage the day-to-day delivery of the BHA project, focusing on community engagement and communications. Responsibilities include coordinating project activities within budget, developing and managing public engagement events, strengthening links across community groups, communicating scientific findings such as the Maerl Survey Report to wider audiences, and developing the BHA website and social media presence.
The role also involves supporting and coordinating citizen science surveys and working closely with marine scientists, the Marine Archivist, Alliance groups, and other partners. While a sound understanding of marine ecology is required to engage credibly with stakeholders, specialist marine science expertise is not expected.
The position requires attendance at community events and survey activities, and the ability to carry project equipment including diving/survey gear and event materials. Diving is not required. A full driving licence is essential due to travel within the project area.
The role reports to the Steering Committee for the Blue Hope Alliance. The start date is ASAP, subject to appointment and pre-employment checks.
Experience
Experience in community engagement, project coordination, or communications is desirable. A sound understanding of marine ecology sufficient to engage with marine scientists and stakeholders is required. Experience working with community groups and managing public events is advantageous.

Qualifications
No specific qualifications are mandated, but relevant experience or education in marine ecology, environmental science, community engagement, or communications will be beneficial. Right to work in the UK is required.
