About the Role
Hertfordshire County Council is seeking self-motivated Recycling Operatives and Flexi Recycling Operatives to join our Recycling Centre service team. You will play a vital role in increasing recycling rates and diverting waste from landfill across Hertfordshire. Training is fully provided including First Aid, Fire Marshall, Manual Handling, and Plant operation. Opportunities for progression within the team are available for motivated individuals.

As a Recycling Operative, your duties will include showing and assisting service users to dispose of waste correctly, checking permits for vans and trailers, ensuring waste streams remain uncontaminated, maintaining a clean and tidy work environment, and looking for ways to improve customer service and recycling rates. You will also operate waste compaction equipment such as JCBs and compactors following training.

Flexi Operatives will support essential waste and recycling services across multiple Council sites in Hertfordshire. Duties include safe sorting and handling of recyclable materials, maintaining site cleanliness, and assisting with equipment operation where trained. Flexibility in working hours and locations is required. A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential, with mileage expenses reimbursed according to Council policy.

Experience
Experience working under sustained physical effort and in all weather conditions is advantageous. Proven ability to deliver excellent customer service and remain calm under pressure is essential.

You are an enthusiastic team player committed to exceeding operational standards. You must be able to advise residents on waste disposal safely and effectively. Flexibility to work across multiple sites and shifts is required for Flexi Operatives.

A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are mandatory for Flexi Operative roles.
