About the Role
This fixed-term Research Fellow position is part of the "SHREDDER" (Sustainable High-value Recovery via Engineered Deconstruction of Energy storage for Reuse) project funded by Innovate UK. The project is a collaborative research and development programme led by Ecobat Solutions UK Ltd, in partnership with the University of Birmingham and the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC). SHREDDER addresses a critical challenge in UK lithium-ion battery recycling by transforming shredding from a simple size-reduction step into an active, parameter-controlled separation process to selectively liberate high-value materials at source.

The postholder will work within the Energy Materials Group (EMG) to investigate the relationship between shredding conditions and material outputs using a bespoke research shredder. They will contribute to advancing the technology from laboratory concept to industrial validation over 36 months, collaborating closely with project partners.

Key responsibilities include developing research objectives, contributing to funding bids, analysing and interpreting data, disseminating findings through publications and presentations, and supporting enterprise and public engagement activities. The role involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team and contributing to an inclusive and equitable working culture.
