About the Role
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher for a two-year position focused on Land Ice Earth Observation. This role is part of the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Intercomparison Exercise (IMBIE), an international project funded by the European Space Agency and NASA. The primary goal is to develop detailed estimates of ice sheet mass trends at fine temporal and spatial resolution from satellite data, tracking the evolution of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets from the 1990s to the present day. These data are vital for assessing climate change impacts on Earth's polar regions, quantifying sea level contributions from polar ice sheets, and evaluating and constraining ice sheet models and their projections.

You will be responsible for integrating ice sheet mass balance estimates derived from satellite observations of ice sheet volume change, ice discharge, and Earth's gravity to assess mass trends in Greenland and Antarctica. Your work will contribute to international efforts including the Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP7 (ISMIP7) and the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC). You will produce periodic progress reports and scientific publications to communicate new advances and findings. Additionally, you will have opportunities to contribute to international climate assessment reports and focus on specific research goals within the broad remit of the project, making wider use of the IMBIE dataset.

As part of the UK Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM) within the School of Geography and Natural Sciences at Northumbria University, you will collaborate with international partners and space agencies, participate in scientific meetings, and present your work at leading conferences and workshops in glaciology, sea level science, and Earth Observation. The School hosts a vibrant community of cryosphere researchers with regular seminars and events covering cryosphere Earth Observation, ice sheet numerical modelling, and polar oceanography.

Requirements

Experience
Proven skills in scientific programming and a track record of analysing and interpreting large geophysical datasets. Knowledge and experience of Earth Observation techniques are essential.

About you
You should have a strong interest in Earth Observation and ice dynamics, with the ability to work collaboratively within an international research environment. You will be motivated to contribute to high-impact scientific projects and communicate your findings effectively through reports and publications.

Qualifications
A PhD in a quantitative discipline such as physics, applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, glaciology, geophysics, meteorology, or a related numerate field is required.
