About the Role
Thames21 is a leading environmental charity focused on restoring rivers and connecting communities to their local green-blue spaces across London and the Thames Basin. We are seeking a skilled River Skills Officer to lead the delivery and development of Thames21’s environmental training programme. This role empowers communities to take independent action for rivers and supports Thames21’s network of volunteer-led River Action Groups.
The key responsibility is to create and deliver inclusive, engaging, and inspiring courses that help people understand what makes a healthy river, the vital role rivers play, and how everyone can contribute to protecting and improving London’s blue-green spaces. The role involves mixing theory with practical activities, working in diverse settings including indoors, online, and at river sites.
A typical day may include delivering flagship courses, developing training modules, supporting River Action Groups with risk assessments and event planning, promoting training opportunities, and coordinating the annual River Action Group Forum. You will also contribute to strategic planning, monitoring project outputs, and maintaining accurate records.
This role requires a passion for rivers and learning, excellent communication skills, and the ability to engage diverse audiences. You will work closely with the EMPOWER Rivers Programme Manager and other Thames21 staff to ensure the training programme’s success and compliance with relevant policies and legislation.
Experience
Proven ability to design and deliver engaging training courses to diverse audiences. Experience working with community groups and environmental projects is highly desirable. Strong organisational skills to manage training logistics, learner support, and accreditation processes.
About you
Passionate about rivers, environmental issues, and community empowerment. Comfortable working in a variety of settings, both indoors and outdoors. Able to communicate complex ideas clearly and enthusiastically. Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to work independently and as part of a team. Willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends, and travel as required.
Qualifications
A strong interest and working knowledge of environmental issues is essential. Relevant qualifications in environmental education, community engagement, or related fields are desirable but not mandatory. A full clean UK driving licence is advantageous but not essential.
