About the Role
We have a great opportunity for an experienced Engineer to join Sustrans Scotland, working on projects that address urgent challenges such as the climate emergency, unequal access to green spaces, social injustice caused by private vehicle dominance, and the creation of equitable, enjoyable public spaces for all. Our Engineers are involved in the design, delivery, and maintenance of active travel infrastructure across urban and rural environments. Your responsibilities will include managing the design of highway infrastructure for walking and cycling, traffic-free greenways, and structures over and under roads, rivers, and railways, as well as overseeing path construction and improvement projects.
We pride ourselves on a collaborative team environment that values every member’s expertise and supports a healthy work-life balance. Professional development opportunities are provided, including an ICE-approved training scheme. The role requires regular travel within Scotland, occasionally involving overnight stays, with a focus on hubs in Edinburgh and Glasgow. As a charity committed to sustainable travel, most colleagues cycle, walk, wheel, or use public transport for work journeys, supported by access to a Sustrans pool bicycle and National Standards Cycling Training.
Experience
Proven experience as a skilled Engineer providing technical authority and leading, motivating, and managing teams. Demonstrable expertise in managing construction projects through their full life cycle from conception to handover. Experience leading the production, review, and approval of engineering drawings and technical reports. Strong track record in managing project delivery including resource allocation, risk management, and monitoring programme and budget.
About you
Excellent communicator with the ability to build relationships across diverse groups and backgrounds. Skilled in identifying new business development opportunities, preparing bids, and developing partnerships. Committed to Sustrans’ values of reducing inequality, valuing diversity, enabling inclusion, and treating all people with dignity and respect. Based within the geographical area with willingness to travel regularly to Edinburgh or Glasgow hubs.
Qualifications
Relevant engineering qualifications and professional accreditation are expected. Commitment to continuous professional development and participation in an ICE-approved training scheme.
