Hours
Full Time - 37 hours per week. Part time considered with a minimum of 22 hours per week. Hybrid working available with an expectation of at least 60% of working time spent at the designated workplace or other business locations as required. Occasional travel, including overnight stays, may be necessary.
Salary
£48,581 per annum plus employer pension contribution of 28.97% of your salary.
About the Role
Join the Department for Transport’s Low Carbon Fuels Directorate and contribute to accelerating the transition to greener transport while tackling climate change. You will work in a high-performing, supportive team developing expertise in green transport policy, low carbon fuels, and emerging energy systems. This is a fast-paced, priority policy area central to government ambition, ideal for motivated professionals passionate about sustainability and real-world decarbonisation.
The roles are spread across two divisions:
- LCF Strategy: Focus on developing the UK’s strategic approach to low carbon fuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production, hydrogen strategy, and applying systems thinking to complex cross-cutting challenges. Collaboration across government on infrastructure transition, resilience, and long-term strategic planning is key.
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel Revenue Certainty Mechanism: Support policy design and implementation of the funding mechanism and contract allocation for the Revenue Certainty Mechanism.
Key responsibilities may include:
- Developing strategic approaches to low carbon fuels by assessing policy options, drafting documents, compiling evidence, scoping research, and planning stakeholder engagement.
- Monitoring and supporting low carbon policy contributions across government.
- Applying technical expertise to inform policy design.
- Managing workstreams autonomously, identifying issues, and proposing innovative solutions.
- Collaborating with modal transport teams to ensure alignment with existing regulations such as RTFO and SAF Mandate.
- Commissioning and overseeing expert advice including legal and analytical inputs.
- Building strong relationships with stakeholders across government, academia, and industry.
- Providing advice and briefing to ministers and drafting responses to correspondence and FOI/EIR requests.
Experience
- Knowledge or experience in transport decarbonisation, STEM, climate change policy, or sustainability from work, study, or personal interest.
- Proven ability to engage and manage stakeholders, communicating complex information effectively to diverse audiences.
- Experience making decisions or recommendations based on complex, incomplete, or contradictory evidence.
