About the Role
Green Alliance is seeking a Senior Political Adviser to strengthen and expand our relationships and networks across Westminster, delivering ambitious political leadership on a range of environmental issues. You will lead advocacy interventions and provide political support primarily within the natural environment theme, focusing on nature, land use, food, and farming. As a senior member of the politics team, you will lead major projects and themes, such as the Environment APPG, manage key external relationships, and support the Director of Politics and Director of Strategic Partnerships in leading the team.
The role requires exceptional communication skills, the ability to inspire and unite people around a shared vision, and strong interpersonal skills to collaborate across Green Alliance and with our extensive network of partners. You will identify and lead opportunities for the UK government to achieve environmental progress through effective advocacy strategies.
You will have direct access to senior policymakers and environmental leaders, requiring you to articulate recommendations clearly and persuasively. A deep understanding of UK political processes, especially within Westminster, Parliament, and Whitehall, is essential, along with experience influencing policy. Experience working with politicians and the media is advantageous. While knowledge of environmental policy is beneficial, it is not vital.
The role demands excellent organisational skills, the ability to manage multiple projects and relationships simultaneously, and the capacity to think quickly and strategically.
Position in the Organisation
The Senior Political Adviser reports to the Director of Strategic Partnerships and works closely with Green Alliance’s policy and communications teams. You will regularly brief and advise the senior management team and may have future line management responsibilities for politics and policy advisers and analysts.
Experience
- Excellent understanding of the UK political landscape and processes, including parliamentary questions, amending legislation, and select committee procedures.
- Detailed knowledge of UK and global climate and nature policy.
- Proven experience working with diverse stakeholders, convening and collaborating while managing competing priorities.
- Strong project management skills, delivering outcomes on time and within budget.
- Demonstrated success influencing policy through advocacy and campaigning.
- Experience managing people, including direct reports, consultants, or freelancers.
- Experience leading programme delivery, coordination, and administration.
- Skilled in writing press releases, media engagement, and securing coverage.
- Direct experience working with and influencing politicians, political advisers, or senior decision makers.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and work independently.
- Motivation to work in a purpose-driven organisation focused on environmental and social wellbeing.
About you
You are a highly organised, capable multi-tasker with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You are passionate about environmental progress and skilled at building and maintaining relationships across political and environmental sectors. You thrive in dynamic environments, can manage multiple priorities, and are proactive in identifying opportunities to advance Green Alliance’s mission. You contribute positively to a supportive and inclusive work culture.
Qualifications
While specific qualifications are not stated, a strong understanding of political processes and environmental policy, combined with relevant experience, is essential.
Desirable
- Knowledge of DEFRA-related policies, particularly around food, farming, nature, and land use.
- Experience building networks across sectors.
- Commitment to and familiarity with cross-sector collaboration complexities.
