About the Role
This role exists to develop corporate environmental strategy, offer technical advice, support compliance, and hold the business to account through compliance and assurance activities. It acts as the organisational repository of technical knowledge and works across the business to coach and upskill on environmental capability. The role supports TfL culture change by setting environmental and sustainability vision and policy, coordinating improvement activities, and tracking progress. It also contributes to promoting diversity and inclusion across the function.
Key accountabilities include championing and informing the corporate environmental strategy through innovation and research, supporting integration of environment and social impact into policy development, and challenging the business to change culture and behaviour to improve corporate environmental performance. The role coordinates and tracks progress against plans, raises awareness through stakeholder engagement, provides advice and coaching to SHE teams and the wider business, and supports the ongoing development and use of the SHE Management System.
Additional responsibilities include providing environmental input to procurement and contract management processes, understanding and interpreting environmental performance data, supporting external reporting requirements, drafting consultation responses and internal briefings, and developing environment and sustainability tools such as the Whole Life Carbon tool. The role champions safety, health, and environment, role modelling these principles in all activities.
This position may involve line management of Assistant Environment Managers, graduates, apprentices, and colleagues on placement.

- Strong knowledge of environmental management regulations and TfL-related issues (Essential)
- Strong knowledge of designing and evaluating initiatives to improve corporate environmental performance (Essential)
- Proven knowledge of forming strategy and progressing it into action in a complex organisation (Essential)
- Expert understanding of the political framework in which TfL operates (Essential)
- Strong knowledge of TfL's and other SHE Management systems (Essential)
- Strong knowledge of impact evaluation methodologies (Essential)
- Knowledge of UN Sustainable Development Goals (Desirable)
- Membership of relevant professional body, e.g., IOSH, IEMA, CIBSE (Desirable)
- Related degree or equivalent qualification (Desirable)
