About the Role
Thornton Tomasetti is seeking a Graduate Sustainability Engineer to join our London office within the Sustainability Practice. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a diverse range of projects across the UK and internationally, supporting net zero and circular economy ambitions through a whole life carbon and performance-led approach. You will be involved in designing and optimising low-carbon, high-performance buildings by analysing energy use, embodied carbon, daylight, comfort, and material impacts. The role includes developing integrated sustainability strategies that align with architectural, structural, and building services design. This position is ideal for a motivated graduate or early-career professional eager to gain hands-on experience on projects that demonstrate industry leadership in sustainability and resilience.
Responsibilities
- Perform whole-life carbon assessments, including operational and embodied impacts, and develop tailored carbon reduction strategies.
- Contribute to sustainability certification frameworks such as BREEAM, LEED, and the Living Building Challenge through evidence collection and credit coordination.
- Support energy, daylight, comfort, and material performance analyses using digital tools such as Grasshopper, Ladybug Tools, EnergyPlus, and IES.
- Conduct material research and life cycle assessments to guide low-carbon material choices and circular economy strategies.
- Prepare embodied carbon management plans and develop project reporting dashboards.
- Assist in the preparation of GLA Whole Life Carbon Assessments and Circular Economy Statements.
- Participate in sustainable design workshops and charrettes with clients and multidisciplinary design teams.
- Present findings effectively through well-structured reports, diagrams, and presentations.
Experience
Interest or experience in energy modelling, embodied carbon, circular economy, and sustainable building design. Familiarity with whole life carbon tools (e.g. OneClick LCA) and design software such as Rhino, Grasshopper, and Revit is expected. Knowledge of sustainability certification schemes such as BREEAM, LEED, and the Living Building Challenge is desirable. Some familiarity with Python, parametric workflows, or environmental simulation tools (e.g. Ladybug, Honeybee) is advantageous.
About you
A motivated and proactive individual with a passion for sustainability and innovation in the built environment. You should be eager to learn and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams, demonstrating strong communication skills and the ability to present complex information clearly. An interest in current industry initiatives such as LETI, UKNZCBS, and ACAN is desirable.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Building Science is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
