About the Role
As Sustainability Strategy Manager at Nationwide Building Society, you will lead the development and delivery of a portfolio-wide sustainability strategy, translating ESG goals into clear, actionable plans that drive measurable improvements across a large, multi-site estate. You will take ownership of sustainability performance, governance, and reporting, ensuring compliance with key regulations such as MEES, IFRS, and TCFD, while embedding robust systems, policies, and data processes. Working closely with senior stakeholders and supply chain partners, you will deliver initiatives across energy, water, waste, and carbon reduction, manage significant budgets of approximately £30 million, and influence decision-making at all levels to achieve long-term environmental and business value. This role requires strong commercial awareness, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to influence at all levels. Nationwide supports hybrid working to foster collaboration and connection, balancing office presence with home working.

Responsibilities
You will shape and deliver the sustainability strategy across the property portfolio, turning ESG goals into practical actions with clear ownership. You will monitor performance, analyse and report progress, ensuring all internal and external reporting, including board-level updates, is accurate and timely. You will drive improvements in energy, water, waste, and carbon reduction by working with suppliers and utilising tools such as energy modelling and lifecycle analysis. You will ensure alignment with key regulations and embed strong policies, data standards, and recognised frameworks such as BREEAM, WELL, or LEED. Building strong relationships with senior stakeholders and partners, you will influence decisions, manage complex contracts, and foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in sustainability.

Experience
- Strong understanding of sustainability legislation, reporting standards, and ESG frameworks (e.g. MEES, IFRS, TCFD).
- Familiarity with sustainability certifications such as BREEAM, WELL, or LEED.
- Proven experience managing sustainability performance through data, KPIs, and regulatory requirements.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and communicate complex data.
- Experience managing budgets, supplier relationships, and complex contracts.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels including board-level reporting.
