About the Role
2 Years Fixed Term Contract / Secondment Opportunity. The Public Realm Division ensures that the London Borough of Hackney is clean, safe and accessible for all residents, businesses and visitors. The Streetscene team is responsible for the design and maintenance of highway networks, footways, bridges and lighting on all public roads, contributing to community well-being and creating a sustainable public realm. Working within the Public Realm Division, the Sustainable Transport and Engagement team delivers smarter travel and road safety programmes to influence behaviour change towards safer and more sustainable travel.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sustainable Transport Planner to assist in managing and progressing an ambitious project at the forefront of transport planning. You will help deliver projects focused on sustainable and active travel, with an emphasis on shared mobility and decarbonisation of transport. Working in partnership with an appointed service delivery partner, you will support the planning and delivery of forward-looking sustainable and shared mobility networks in Hackney, accelerating the uptake of cleaner travel options and improving air quality for all residents.

You will work under the direct supervision of a senior transport planner, with opportunities to lead some project work. The role involves collecting, assembling and analysing data to provide essential background material for decision-making. You will also support statutory and legal obligations related to transportation, including traffic management orders and Council decision-making processes, in a politically sensitive and customer-focused manner.

This role offers the chance to use your initiative and creativity in designing and implementing public consultation and engagement plans in coordination with the Council’s communications team. Strong report writing skills, knowledge of transport policy, and the ability to interpret transport strategies are essential. Familiarity with Excel functions such as PIVOT and LOOKUP is required, and knowledge of GIS is a considerable advantage. Confidence in engaging with and managing expectations of stakeholders, including politicians, is also important.

Hackney Council values its staff as its most outstanding asset, dedicated to serving residents and committed to organisational goals. The Council is working towards being a place for everyone, celebrating diversity and inclusion, and welcomes applications from all backgrounds.

About you
You are proactive, creative, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. You have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing. You demonstrate the ability to interpret transport strategies and policies and apply them effectively. You are comfortable working in a politically sensitive environment and have a customer-focused approach.
