About the Role
We are offering a 2-year fixed term contract / secondment opportunity within the Public Realm Division of the London Borough of Hackney. Our Streetscene team is responsible for the design and maintenance of highway networks, footways, bridges, and lighting on all public roads, contributing to a safe, clean, and accessible environment for residents, businesses, and visitors. The Sustainable Transport and Engagement team delivers smarter travel and road safety programmes aimed at encouraging safer and more sustainable travel behaviours.
As a Sustainable Transport Planner, you will assist in managing and progressing an ambitious project focused on sustainable and active travel, with particular emphasis on shared mobility and transport decarbonisation. Working alongside an expert service delivery partner, you will support the planning and delivery of innovative sustainable and shared mobility networks in Hackney, accelerating the uptake of cleaner travel options and improving air quality for all residents.
You will work under the direct supervision of a senior transport planner, with opportunities to lead on some project work. Your role will involve collecting, assembling, and analysing data to provide essential background material for key decisions. You will also support the delivery of statutory and legal transport obligations, including traffic management orders and Council decision-making processes, in a politically sensitive and customer-focused manner.
This role offers the chance to design and implement public consultation and engagement plans in coordination with the Council’s communications team. Strong report writing skills, knowledge of transport policy, and the ability to interpret transport strategies are essential. Proficiency with Excel functions such as PIVOT and LOOKUP is expected, and knowledge of GIS will be a considerable advantage. Confidence in engaging with and managing stakeholder expectations, including politicians, is also required.
Hackney Council values its staff as its most outstanding asset, committed to serving residents and achieving organisational goals. We are an inclusive employer, welcoming diversity and flexible working arrangements. We encourage applicants who share our values of being Proud, Ambitious, Pioneering, Open, Proactive, and Inclusive.
Experience
A relevant degree or equivalent is a minimum requirement. Experience or further qualifications in Transport Planning or related skills such as project management would be advantageous. Familiarity with data analysis, transport policy, and stakeholder engagement is essential.
About you
You will be proactive, creative, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, along with the ability to manage politically sensitive issues and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders including politicians. You should be confident in using Excel (including PIVOT and LOOKUP functions) and ideally have knowledge of GIS.
Qualifications
A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Transport Planning or a related field is required. Additional qualifications or training in project management or transport planning will be an advantage. Training relevant to the role and project work will be provided.
