About the Role
Join Southern Water's Clean Rivers & Seas Task Force and play a leading role in delivering one of the UK's most ambitious environmental programmes. Storm overflows are a major concern for our customers and stakeholders, and we are committed to leading the charge in resolving this issue. Our Clean Rivers & Seas Task Force implements pioneering and industry-leading solutions to reduce spills and reliance on overflows while enhancing the environment for our communities.
We are recruiting multiple levels of Wastewater Networks Technical Specialist (from Principal to Specialist) to join this newly created team. These critical technical roles ensure a credible programme of works that deliver spill reductions where needed and at the right pace.
The Specialist role focuses on wastewater engineering and modelling, contributing technical expertise. The Principal role provides technical authority, guides programme direction, and influences key decisions.
Key responsibilities include analysing wastewater catchment performance, modelling scenarios, proposing and reviewing technical solutions, and monitoring performance. You will contribute to the technical design and assurance of the storm overflow programme by providing input, options, challenge, steering, and governance to ensure a technically feasible set of interventions for our AMP8 programme.
You will also undertake technical assurance of benefits from the storm overflow programme by designing monitoring programmes, conducting modelling and analysis to measure intervention benefits, and justifying our PR24 assumption base to secure circa £2 billion investment.
Supporting innovative approaches for analysis alongside our Technical Lead and other thought leaders internally, in academia, across the UK water industry, and the supply chain will be a key part of your role.
Southern Water is at the forefront of transforming Britain’s water industry, investing £7.8 billion for 2025-30 to enhance resilience, sustainability, and service excellence. This is an unparalleled opportunity to join a business committed to delivering a generational shift in water services management. You will work alongside a highly skilled leadership team with a clear vision for the future and have the chance to make a meaningful impact, influence major strategic decisions, and drive long-term value creation.
At Southern Water, we believe diverse perspectives drive innovation. If you’re passionate about making a positive impact and think you can bring value to our team, we’d love to hear from you—even if you don’t tick every box. Your unique skills and experiences could be exactly what we need.
Experience
Strong technical bias, ideally in engineering. Experience using a variety of analytical tools and packages such as InfoWorks ICM, SQL, R, and GIS. Hydraulic modelling experience is highly desirable. Proven ability to challenge colleagues and the supply chain to ensure robust interventions are designed and delivered.
About you
Data-driven with superior analytical skills and a passion for using data to inform decisions. Able to work collaboratively with internal teams, academia, industry partners, and the supply chain. Motivated to contribute to a major environmental programme and comfortable working in a dynamic, evolving environment.
Qualifications
Degree level technical qualifications (BEng or MSc) in engineering or equivalent experience.
