About the Role
As a Year in Industry Sustainability Advisor, you will join experienced professionals who embed sustainability into AWE’s programmes, projects and facilities. You will support the integration of sustainability principles into business decision-making to create long-term value while meeting operational objectives. Your work will contribute to AWE’s Sustainability Strategy and Climate Transition Plan by supporting initiatives that strengthen climate resilience, reduce carbon emissions, enhance biodiversity, improve resource efficiency and maximise social value.

The role sits within Sustainability, Safety, Health, Environment and Quality. You will gain experience supporting AWE’s ISO 14001-certified Environmental Management System, helping manage environmental risks and ensure legal compliance. You will work across business areas including operational facilities and major project delivery, developing an understanding of governance, regulatory and assurance frameworks that support sustainable delivery.

Key activities include developing an understanding of AWE’s Sustainability Strategy, supporting sustainability programmes, embedding sustainability into planning and delivery, using sustainability assessment tools, supporting performance measurement and reporting, gaining practical experience in environmental risk assessment and management, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to support sustainable outcomes.

Learning and development opportunities include working alongside sustainability experts, gaining strategic understanding of sustainability in business, building technical capabilities in assessment and compliance, developing knowledge across climate, carbon, biodiversity, resource efficiency and social value, and enhancing professional confidence in stakeholder engagement and communication.

Requirements

Experience
We welcome applications from students studying Sustainability, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Geography or related disciplines. No prior professional experience is required, but a keen interest in sustainability and environmental issues is essential.

Qualifications
You must be on track to achieve a minimum 2:2 degree classification or demonstrate equivalent academic performance before starting the placement. You must be a UK national holding a UK passport and have lived in the UK for 10 years to apply for Developed Vetting security clearance. You must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance.
