About the Role
As an Assistant (Apprentice) Outdoor Instructor, you will make a meaningful contribution to people across Westminster. Based on a 56-acre site in the beautiful Surrey Hills, you will work towards an Outdoor Activity Instructor Level 3 apprenticeship while being trained to run outdoor activity sessions for groups visiting the centre. Some young people you work with, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN), may have never experienced the countryside before. You will help them explore the woods, get muddy, and build friendships—supporting them to fulfill their potential and leave the centre with a new perspective on life. Activities include climbing, raft building, historical studies, and archery, allowing you to develop your skills under the supervision of some of the UK’s best instructors. Additional responsibilities may include assisting the Grounds person with conservation and grounds management tasks, as well as attending training events, workshops, and tutorials. Free accommodation is provided as part of this live-in role.

Requirements

Experience
Experience working with children or young people is desirable but not essential. A background or qualification in Environmental Science, Geography, or Biology is a plus but not required.

About you
You will have a passion for education and the outdoors and be comfortable working actively in all weather conditions. You should be confident with heights and comfortable in confined spaces, as some activities take place in an artificial cave system and on a climbing tower. A confident swimmer is required as STA pool responder training will be provided. You must be a true team player with a motivating and enthusiastic approach to your work. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to learn from a supportive team, help young people reach their full potential, and set your career on a positive trajectory. Westminster City Council is committed to supporting Care Leavers into the workplace and offers an automatic interview scheme for Care Leavers who meet the essential criteria.

Qualifications
No formal qualifications are required to apply, but a willingness to learn and develop through the apprenticeship is essential.
