About the Role
Environmental Health at Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where passionate and expert professionals go above and beyond for their communities every day. As an Environmental Health Officer within our Proactive Noise Team, you will respond to complaints relating to residential, commercial and street-based noise, odour and light pollution. Using your knowledge of environmental health policies and legislation, you will work to make our borough a healthy and peaceful place to live, work and visit.
Your role will include carrying out routine or unannounced visits and inspections to ensure compliance with legislation, taking action to improve conditions through engagement and education, and delivering a fair and informed response to complaints and concerns from our communities. You will be ready to take enforcement action if necessary, including initiating legal proceedings and preparing and giving evidence in court.
You will promote the integration of environmental health principles throughout the organisation and provide expert guidance to businesses, residents and visitors. You will respond quickly to concerns raised by the community, prioritising those with the highest impact and resolving complex and recurring complaints. Taking a proactive approach, you will identify areas of risk to the public, educate on the impact of behaviour, and work to stop negative actions.
Helping businesses and individuals meet regulatory requirements, you will safeguard standards and public health. Additionally, you will undertake project-based work to improve the systems, policies and procedures used to deliver a first-class service. Please refer to the Job Description for more information.
Experience
Well-developed experience in a customer-facing role responding to written and in-person complaints related to environmental health issues. Proven ability to develop trusted relationships and use tact and diplomacy to deescalate conflict effectively. Experience working alongside a range of agencies and professionals to deliver outstanding public health services. Capable of gathering information to support legal action and court proceedings.
About you
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to respond calmly to emotionally challenging situations. Able to explain legislation and procedures clearly while underlining consequences and penalties of non-compliance. An empathetic listener confident working independently in the community. Skilled at influencing behaviour through education and outlining consequences, with the ability to make quick decisions to achieve compliance and reduce risk.
Strong written communication skills for correspondence and evidence preparation. Able to plan and manage workload to agreed targets and standards. Good IT skills, particularly with Microsoft Office suite, and willing to use handheld devices to record information and respond to customers in the community.
Committed to continual professional development, willing to undertake training and refresher courses, and share expertise with colleagues.
Qualifications
Degree or diploma in Environmental Health or a similar relevant qualification is preferred.
