About the Role
What if you could shape a career as unique as you? At WSP, you can find opportunities to grow and do what matters to you. Join our Ground and Water Team in the UK as an Associate Hydrogeologist and work alongside industry-leading experts who develop and maintain UK industry standard software such as ConSim and LandSim. This role offers direct mentoring and career development within a supportive and inclusive environment.
As an Associate Hydrogeologist, you will lead projects and teams, providing high-level environmental consultancy services to both external and internal clients. You will have technical oversight and guidance responsibilities, contribute to evaluating opportunities, develop project proposals, and maintain strong business relationships to deliver commercial targets. Staying up to date with technical and legislative developments and sharing knowledge within your team is essential.
Your role will include leadership and line management of staff, proactive project management of complex projects with strong commercial awareness, and ensuring timely completion of finance systems and invoicing. You will lead by example on processes, procedures, and protocols, and provide robust technical direction and constructive feedback on work prepared by others. You may lead a small team and will build and maintain client relationships through regular communication and visits.
Key activities include managing hydrogeological data, developing conceptual models, and using software such as ConSim, LandSim, P20, FeFlow, Modflow, and Seep/W. You will be involved in hydrogeological risk assessment, dewatering, groundwater resource management, pumping and yield tests, modelling, borehole prognosis, abstraction, and geothermal projects.
You will develop proposals for technically challenging projects or those with values over £100k net revenue, gaining awareness of contract types and project governance. Managing multiple projects and proposals simultaneously is expected. You will promote health, safety, and wellbeing culture and demonstrate WSP’s values.
Accurate and efficient preparation of complex reports, effective delegation with review and feedback, and developing specialist skills aligned with career aspirations are key aspects of this role.
Experience
Proven hydrogeological skills in managing data and preparing evidence-backed conceptual models, gained in consultancy or relevant industrial or regulatory roles. Experience contributing to factual and interpretive reports, with evidence of reporting competency where possible. Experience in risk assessment modelling using ConSim, RTM, and LandSim. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and proposals with commercial accountability.
About you
A motivated and engaging team player who contributes collaboratively to the technical and social strength of the Hydrogeology team. Takes pride in their work and encourages best practice. Delivers work efficiently and drives commercial excellence. Maintains trust of peers and junior staff, fostering an open environment for questions and problem-solving. Shows curiosity and encourages solutions that minimize upward delegation and improve processes. Takes ownership of personal training and professional development, including achieving further qualifications and seeking exposure beyond current experience. Knows technical limits and seeks help when necessary.
Qualifications
A postgraduate qualification (MTech, MSc, or PhD) in Hydrogeology or a related discipline. Chartered status or equivalent with a relevant professional body is required or in progress.
