About the Role

Join our Sustainable Water Management business, a national team of 300 water science and engineering professionals, experiencing strong and sustained growth. We are seeking Associate or Associate Directors to take leadership roles, primarily working with Local Authority flood management teams. You will have a competent understanding of key legislation and policies including the Flood Risk Management Act, National Planning Framework 4, SEPA guidance, and local authority policies.
Your main focus will be delivering and leading flood risk management projects such as flood investigations, developing flood strategies, flood alleviation solutions, natural flood management, sustainable drainage master-planning, and supporting planning processes to achieve sustainable water environment solutions. While the role focuses on local authority clients in key locations, there is opportunity and expectation to deliver projects across the UK.
Your responsibilities will include engaging professionally with clients and developing trusted advisor relationships, leading delivery of high-quality technical outputs often as reviewer and approver, mentoring junior colleagues, managing small project teams, balancing programme, budget and quality requirements, securing new projects and extensions, championing health and safety behaviours, and contributing to growing WSP’s technical capability, knowledge, and innovation base.
Experience
- Experience working in flood risk management with local authorities or a combination of public and private sector flood risk management experience.
- Demonstrable experience in budgeting and leading delivery of projects or technical outputs related to flood risk management or sustainable drainage.
- Understanding of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, Land Drainage Act, Planning Practice Guidance: Flood Risk and Coastal Change, and their application for flood risk management for Local Authorities in the UK.
- Knowledge of surface water drainage modelling and Sustainable Drainage Systems.
- Experience preparing Local Flood Risk Management Strategies and Strategic Flood Risk Assessments.
- Demonstrable experience in technical report writing and checking.
- Confidence in presenting and leading meetings with team members and clients.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience supporting and mentoring junior colleagues and liaising with senior colleagues.

Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant environmental, geographical, science or engineering discipline is essential.
- Chartered status with C.WEM, CEnv, CSci or CEng is desired for Principal level or evidence of working towards chartership for Senior level.
