About the Role
Field Energy is an international developer, owner, and operator of renewable infrastructure with a robust pipeline of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across the UK, Italy, Spain, and Germany. Supported by a recent £200 million investment from DIF Capital Partners, Field is on a mission to build a global BESS portfolio and become a defining clean energy player in Europe.

As Lead BESS Engineer, you will lead the design and selection of battery systems for multi-GWh duration energy storage projects across Field’s portfolio. You will stay updated on technological advances in battery cell design, container design, and power conversion equipment. The role involves travel to manufacturing sites and industry conferences to witness tests, engage on project issues, and maintain relationships with technical and commercial partners.

Your responsibilities will cover the full battery lifecycle, working closely with development, construction, and operations teams to support site outline design, noise assessments, interface management with Balance of Plant contractors, and ongoing asset management to optimize battery performance.

This is a broad and varied role suited to someone with an engineering or physical science background who is curious, entrepreneurial, and eager to work with rapidly evolving technology.

Key responsibilities include:
- Developing conceptual designs for new battery storage systems including short-duration, long-duration, and advanced capabilities such as inertia, short-circuit and blackstart services
- Supporting tender evaluations for new battery systems
- Assisting construction teams with commissioning quality monitoring and Factory Acceptance Tests
- Leading engagement with BESS suppliers to anticipate new battery designs impacting project planning
- Supporting legal and contractual teams with technical expertise to manage contractual risks
- Developing in-house approaches to long-term battery management to minimize operational risks and optimize battery health

Requirements

Experience
At least 6 years’ experience in the energy industry, preferably with an energy equipment manufacturer, energy asset owner, or energy design consultancy. Deep understanding of at least one of the following technologies: inverters, battery cells and Battery Management Systems, HV and MV electrical power systems. Experience with power system design or modelling is highly desirable.

About you
You enjoy technical detail and solving new problems with new technology. You are an open, clear communicator who works collaboratively. You are highly organised with proven methods to manage a varied workload. You are enthusiastic, curious, and knowledgeable about the energy storage industry. You communicate complex concepts effectively to non-technical colleagues and engage well with contractors and suppliers globally. You are willing to travel occasionally across Europe and to battery equipment suppliers in China.

Qualifications
An engineering or physical science degree is required.
