About the Role
Field Energy is entering an exciting phase of growth, having been awarded 5 of the 16 long-duration energy storage projects selected by Ofgem. These projects collectively represent approximately three times the capacity of all battery energy storage installed in the UK to date. Currently, Field has 4 projects totaling over 1GWh of energy storage under construction in Great Britain, with many more deliveries planned.
As Lead Grid Connection Engineer (Delivery), you will lead grid compliance deliverables on some of the world’s longest duration Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects from pre-construction through to Final Operational Notification (FON). This hands-on role requires proactive management of projects and key stakeholders including Balance of Plant (BoP) contractors, BESS suppliers, consultants, Transmission Owners (TOs), and the National Electricity System Operator (NESO). You will be highly engaged, resilient, execution-focused, and detail-oriented.
You will report to the Head of Delivery and collaborate closely with in-house experts across Engineering, QHSE, Procurement, Legal, and Development. Experience managing end-to-end compliance on transmission-connected renewable projects, especially in north Scotland, is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead pre-construction engineering activities including reviewing grid-related contract sections, developing technical outputs such as single line diagrams and fault level contributions, and commissioning early system studies.
- Support design development by reviewing third-party power system studies for grid code compliance and providing recommendations.
- Contribute to lender and investor technical due diligence and evaluate technical tender submissions.
- Coordinate with grid development teams and act as the key interface with TOs engineering teams.
- Assist Project Manager with schedules, risk registers, budgets, and Mod-App processes.
- Review updated grid connection documentation from NESO, raising risks and recommending mitigation.
- Track and manage commercial and programme milestones in grid connection agreements.
- Lead engagement with NESO for Operational Notification Compliance Process (ONCP) during construction and commissioning.
- Review detailed design submissions, manage technical RFIs, analyse network data, and ensure compliance through system studies.
- Coordinate between BoP contractors and BESS suppliers to progress compliance, support testing and commissioning, and facilitate safe energisation and handover.
- Attend Commissioning Panel meetings and support operations and maintenance documentation review.
- Manage open compliance issues from Initial Operational Notification (ION) through to FON.
- Support electrical due diligence for acquisitions, lead technical site evaluations, review connection offers, and liaise with developers, TOs, and DNOs.
- Stay informed on industry updates and grid code changes to identify potential risks.
This role offers the opportunity to have a significant impact on pioneering renewable energy projects within a dynamic and growing company.
Experience
- Electrical Engineering (or similar) degree and/or over 8 years of industry experience in a technical or grid-oriented role.
- Strong commercial acumen and thorough understanding of transmission grid connection compliance and project delivery processes.
- Proven experience managing grid compliance on transmission-connected renewable projects.
- Knowledge of project health and safety requirements, including CDM regulations.
- Experience working with multiple stakeholders including contractors, suppliers, consultants, and system operators.
About You
- Highly engaged, resilient, and detail-oriented with a proactive approach.
- Passionate about power systems engineering and well-versed in UK grid codes.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with strong stakeholder management capabilities.
- Comfortable working as part of a multi-disciplinary project team.
Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline preferred.
- Relevant industry certifications or training related to grid connection and compliance are advantageous but not mandatory.
