About the Role
The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) is an independent regulator within the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), responsible for regulating the quality of drinking water supplied by water companies in England and Wales. The Business Support Officer will join a small, busy team providing administrative support to approximately 65 staff including technical Inspectors, Principal Inspectors and the Senior Management Team. This role offers an opportunity for a committed, self-motivated, organised, resourceful and flexible team player to gain experience in a regulatory delivery unit focused on drinking water quality.
Key responsibilities include managing public enquiries and correspondence, finance and procurement duties, recruitment campaign management, stakeholder engagement, production and issuance of legal and official documents, diary and event support for senior management, coordination of training and induction programmes, travel and accommodation arrangements, and data management. Initial focus may be on specific areas with opportunities for cross-training to develop skills across all functions.
The role supports flexible working where practicable and requires attendance at the Inspectorate’s London office for meetings and other duties.
Experience
Experience in customer service and dealing with members of the public is essential, including providing accurate technical information and advice via telephone and email. Experience with finance, procurement and/or recruitment processes is advantageous.
About you

Strong IT skills are required, with willingness to develop proficiency in Word packages, Visio, Power BI, and Power Apps. You must be able to prioritise workload, work at pace, plan ahead, make effective decisions while identifying risks, and deliver outcomes on time to expected quality standards. The role requires building positive, effective and trusted working relationships, understanding the broader organisational context, and an aptitude for training and developing colleagues.
