About the Role
Join Forestry England, a passionate team dedicated to growing the nation’s forests for everyone. As the Community Woodland Communication and Interpretation Officer, you will work alongside the Project Manager and Engagement Officer to support the Silk Wood Community Planting Project. This fixed-term role (10 months) focuses on delivering communications and interpretation outcomes for regenerating 5 hectares of clear-felled woodland affected by ash dieback.
You will be responsible for informing visitors about tree threats, how Westonbirt is enhancing Silk Wood's resilience, and ways the community can get involved. Your work will include creating signage, managing photography and videography, producing blogs and video content, and liaising with local press. Collaboration with volunteers to capture stories and with the Marketing Team to maintain consistent communications with stakeholders is essential. You will also support report writing and communication to funders.
This role involves year-round outdoor work in all weather conditions and on rough terrain. An enhanced DBS check is required due to working with schools, community groups, and vulnerable adults. You may also lead activities with these groups.
Westonbirt, the National Arboretum, is internationally renowned for its botanical tree collections and historic landscape. Managed by Forestry England, it attracts over 500,000 visitors annually and is a key site for education, participation, and conservation. This role contributes to a ten-year vision to inspire people through trees and support climate change goals by engaging visitors with the importance of trees and environmental care.
Experience
Experience in communication, interpretation, or community engagement is desirable. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups including volunteers, schools, and community organisations is important. Experience in outdoor work and managing content such as photography, videography, blogs, and press liaison is advantageous.
About you
You are enthusiastic, motivated, and passionate about forestry, conservation, and community engagement. You have excellent communication skills and can tell compelling stories to diverse audiences. You are comfortable working outdoors in varying weather and terrain. You are able to work independently and as part of a team. You demonstrate professionalism when liaising with stakeholders and volunteers. You are committed to supporting the project’s goals and Forestry England’s mission.
Qualifications
