About the Role
Join Forestry England, a passionate team dedicated to growing and protecting the nation’s forests for everyone. As a District Ecologist, you will play a vital role in safeguarding some of Yorkshire’s most treasured landscapes and species. You will champion Forestry England's Biodiversity Plan, ensuring our forests thrive for generations to come. Your responsibilities will include leading the development and delivery of management plans for designated sites and protected species, turning strategy into practical action on the ground. From ancient woodlands to nationally important heathlands, your expertise will guide how these ecosystems are cared for, using evidence and monitoring to inform decisions. Beyond conservation, you will contribute to forest plans and operational strategies, helping to recover biodiversity at scale. This fixed term appointment runs until 26 November 2028, with the possibility of extension.

Experience
Relevant experience in ecology, biodiversity management, or related environmental fields is essential. Proven ability to develop and deliver management plans for protected sites and species is highly desirable.

You work well collaboratively and independently, demonstrating effective decision-making and adaptability. A commitment to continuous improvement and professional development is important. You will be a key contributor to multi-disciplinary teams and able to engage with a wide range of stakeholders.
Qualifications
A degree or equivalent qualification in ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline is required. Membership of a relevant professional body is desirable. You must have the ability to communicate effectively in accurate spoken English.
