Home-based with a nearby Hub in the West Midlands for collaborative working. The role involves site visits across the West Midlands region and offers a mix of desk and site-based work.

£33,677 per annum plus £390 per month Car Cash Allowance
About the Role
The Ecologist will provide technical expertise for a defined geographical area within the Trust. You will support and deliver the protection, improvement, and promotion of the natural environment of the waterways, providing professional environmental services to help achieve a wide range of corporate objectives. Key responsibilities include providing expert technical advice to ensure compliance with legislation and Trust standards, contributing to asset management strategies focused on vegetation and designated sites, and supporting regional engagement programmes with customers, volunteers, stakeholders, and the public to promote the value of waterways and the Trust’s environmental priorities. You will implement inspection, monitoring, and maintenance programmes for environmental assets, contribute to the environmental management system, coordinate volunteer tasks, and support external engagement and fundraising efforts related to environmental assets and biodiversity. The role requires displaying Trust values and behaviours, promoting diversity and inclusion, and integrating these principles into all aspects of work. This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the environment and communities served by the Trust.
Experience
Proven postgraduate experience applying technical ecological knowledge within a business environment, including ecological survey and monitoring of species and habitats. Experience negotiating effectively with internal and external contacts to achieve desired outcomes. Knowledge and practical experience of UK and European environmental policy and regulatory frameworks, especially relating to designated sites and protected species. Experience operating within a customer service environment is desirable.

Qualifications
Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline. Associate membership of a relevant professional institution such as CIEEM, CIWEM, CIWM, IEMA, or similar. Protected species licence is desirable. Understanding of Trust governance, financial controls, and compliance systems.
