About the Role
United Utilities’ Energy Generation team is seeking a skilled and motivated Field Service Engineer with a strong mechanical core to support the performance of renewable and low carbon energy assets. This permanent role is based in Davyhulme and involves working hands-on with large-scale, high-performance equipment including spark-ignition and dual-fuel engines, combined heat and power (CHP) systems, and associated plant.

In this varied and engaging position, you will apply your diagnostic thinking and mechanical expertise to operate, maintain, and repair complex energy systems. You will take ownership of fault finding, maintenance, and continuous improvement activities, working both independently and collaboratively. Your work will directly contribute to safe, efficient, and reliable sustainable energy production.

Key responsibilities include servicing and repairing large internal combustion engines (CHP units), alternators, and heat recovery systems; diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults using a logical and methodical approach; adjusting combustion settings and control parameters for optimal engine performance; maintaining gas-to-grid systems, filtration units, and emissions control equipment; and monitoring performance data such as temperature, pressure, and emissions to proactively identify and resolve issues.

This role offers ongoing training and development opportunities to support your growth within the renewable energy sector.

Requirements

Experience
- Strong mechanical engineering background gained through formal qualifications (e.g. NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds) or time-served experience
- Experience working with internal combustion engines, including fuel systems, cooling, lubrication, and ignition
- Proven diagnostic and fault-finding skills with a logical and investigative approach rather than simply replacing parts
- Comfortable using diagnostic tools, instrumentation, or software to support maintenance and repair activities

About you
- Mechanically biased engineer with a strong practical mindset and passion for understanding how things work
- Proactive, hands-on approach with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Willingness to learn new skills in areas such as high voltage systems, gas safety, and industrial process controls (training provided)
- Candidates from diverse engineering backgrounds such as HGV, marine, agricultural, or automotive engineering are welcome to apply

Qualifications
- Relevant mechanical engineering qualifications or equivalent practical experience
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and training within the renewable energy sector

Benefits
Annual leave, Employee assistance programme, Company pension, Discounted gym membership, Car scheme
