About the Role
Be part of transforming the UK's energy future by leading environmental sustainability on National Grid's Great Grid Upgrade (GGU) – one of the UK's most ambitious infrastructure programmes. As Environment Manager, you will manage environmental performance across all project phases from design through delivery on a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP). You will work collaboratively with leading contractors, consultants, and sustainability professionals to ensure compliance, drive sustainability goals, and deliver positive environmental outcomes. Key responsibilities include managing environmental risks, developing and implementing ISO 14001-compliant Environmental Management Systems, leading incident investigations, and mentoring a team of environmental professionals. You will also oversee environmental data collection, KPI monitoring, and continuous improvement initiatives to support Laing O'Rourke’s net-zero ambitions through carbon reduction, waste minimisation, and biodiversity enhancement.

Requirements

Experience
Proven track record managing environmental performance on large infrastructure projects with strong knowledge of environmental legislation and management systems including ISO 14001 and ISO 50001. Experience with BREEAM, Biodiversity Net Gain, and carbon reduction strategies is essential. Familiarity with ISO 20400 and PAS 2080 standards and experience in the power and transmission sector is advantageous.

Proactive and positive approach to change management, adaptable to evolving project needs and sustainability standards. Excellent stakeholder engagement skills to collaborate effectively with clients, regulators, consultants, and multi-disciplinary teams.

Qualifications
Degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Sciences, Sustainability, or a related field. Membership of a professional body such as IEMA, IES, or CIEEM is preferred. Ability and willingness to travel nationally across various project sites.
