About the Role
Barnet Council's Public Health Noise & Nuisance Team is seeking two experienced Environmental Health Officers on an 8-week temporary contract to support a surge in service demand. The successful candidates will investigate and resolve a variety of environmental and public health issues affecting residents and businesses across the borough, including noise disturbances, pest infestations, illegal dumping, bonfires, and other nuisances.
This role involves conducting thorough investigations, enforcing relevant legislation, performing site visits, collecting evidence, and preparing documentation for legal proceedings. Officers will work closely with internal teams such as Licensing, Community Safety, and Housing Services, as well as external agencies, to ensure compliance and protect public health.
The position offers exposure to a diverse caseload and the opportunity to contribute to service improvement initiatives within a dynamic team environment.
Experience
- Investigating noise complaints, environmental nuisance complaints, and public protection or environmental enforcement issues
- Familiarity with the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Control of Pollution Act 1974, and Noise Nuisance Legislation
- Evidence collection and preparation of enforcement cases
- Drafting statements, notices, and legal documents
- Handling challenging complaints and interactions with residents
- Working independently and managing a diverse caseload
- Proficient report writing and record-keeping

Strong investigative and problem-solving skills with excellent communication and customer service abilities. You are confident working independently and collaboratively, able to manage competing priorities, and committed to delivering high-quality public protection services.
Qualifications
- Qualification in Environmental Health or relevant experience preferred
- Experience in Local Authority Environmental Health desirable
- Experience presenting evidence in court or tribunal settings advantageous
- Knowledge of Criminal Procedures and Investigations Act 1996 (CPIA) and Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE)
- Experience investigating statutory nuisance complaints and understanding of public health and environmental enforcement activities
