About the Role
Barnet Council is seeking two experienced Environmental Health Officers to join their Public Health Noise and Nuisance Team on a temporary 8-week contract. This role involves investigating a wide range of environmental and public health issues affecting residents and businesses across the borough, including noise nuisances, pest infestations, and waste management. You will conduct investigations, gather evidence, and carry out enforcement actions within a regulatory framework. The role includes site inspections, monitoring visits, occasional out-of-hours witnessing, and preparation of legal documentation. You will collaborate closely with Licensing Teams, Community Safety Teams, Barnet Homes, other council services, and external agencies. This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic team addressing increased service demands with a diverse caseload involving environmental protection, enforcement, and public health matters.
Experience
Proven experience as an Environmental Health Officer or in Environmental Protection. Expertise in investigating noise complaints, statutory nuisances, and environmental enforcement matters. Strong knowledge of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Control of Pollution Act 1974, and related legislation. Experience preparing enforcement notices and legal documentation. Proficient in gathering evidence and preparing cases for prosecution. Understanding of the Criminal Procedures and Investigations Act 1996 (CPIA) and Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE).

Excellent report writing and communication skills. Strong investigative and problem-solving abilities. Ability to manage a varied caseload and work independently. Professional, reliable, and able to work effectively within a team and with external partners.
Qualifications
Relevant qualifications in Environmental Health or related discipline preferred but not explicitly stated. Candidates with experience as Environmental Health Officer, Environmental Protection Officer, Noise & Nuisance Officer, Public Protection Officer, Environmental Enforcement Officer, Regulatory Services Officer, or Technical Officer (Environmental Health) are encouraged to apply.
