About the Role
Forestry England is the country’s largest land manager, caring for the nation’s forests for people, nature and the economy. We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Facilities and Compliance Officer to join our South District Estates Team, responsible for managing facilities and compliance across 46,000 hectares of public forest estate throughout Southern England, including the New Forest, Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex, Dorset, and the Isle of Wight. Our built estate comprises over 200 properties such as residential houses, workshops, depots, offices, storage sheds, and visitor centres.
The core function of this role is to ensure that buildings and their services meet the needs of the people working in them by maintaining legal compliance with health and safety, environmental, and security regulations. Reporting to the district’s Building Surveyor, you will complete and oversee building compliance tasks to ensure properties are safe, efficient, and operating as intended. You will act as a vital link between site teams—including operational, administrative, and office staff—and the Estates Team, facilitating smooth communication and effective facilities management across the district.
Our South England Forest District team consists of around 170 people with diverse roles, managing forests that are nationally and internationally important for conservation and biodiversity. The district includes Special Areas of Conservation, Special Protection Areas, and Ramsar sites, and welcomes nearly 50 million visits annually. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the sustainable management of these valuable landscapes while supporting a wide range of facilities.
Benefits
Alongside your salary, Forestry England contributes an average of 28.97% towards your pension through the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension Scheme. You will receive 25 days holiday per year, increasing by one day per year of service up to 30 days (pro-rated for part-time employees), plus bank holidays. Our employee benefits scheme offers discounts on everyday shopping, holidays, gym memberships, insurance, and wellbeing apps. Free parking at Forestry England sites and free entry to National Arboretums at Westonbirt and Bedgebury are also provided. We are committed to lifelong learning and will support your career development through professional development opportunities and sponsored membership of professional bodies.
Experience
Experience in facilities management, compliance, or a related field is desirable. Proven ability to manage health and safety, environmental, and security compliance within a property portfolio is advantageous.
About you
You are proactive, detail-oriented, and able to work collaboratively with diverse teams. Strong communication skills are essential to act as a liaison between site teams and the Estates Team. You have a commitment to maintaining safe and efficient working environments and are motivated to contribute positively to the management of public forest estate facilities.
Qualifications
Relevant qualifications in facilities management, health and safety, or building compliance are beneficial but not mandatory. A willingness to learn and develop professionally within the role is essential.
