About the Role
The role involves managing waste collection, disposal, and recycling processes within agreed timescales, including hazardous materials. You will be responsible for sourcing best value outcomes for all material streams such as paper, metals, oils, plastics, and non-value waste. The role includes recording weights, costs, and revenues for all waste removed from site, managing and maintaining transport and equipment including forklift trucks, compost units, balers, compressors, and power tools. You will direct staff on appropriate disposal methods for office and electrical products and provide advice on effective waste management. Escorting and supervising external contractors on site is also required.
Additional responsibilities include ensuring staff supervise and manage prisoners safely and securely, incident management and reporting, delivering actions from audits and inspections, implementing HMPPS standards and policies, attending relevant meetings, producing reports, managing resources, and maintaining a safe working environment compliant with Health and Safety legislation. You will also contribute to prisoner reports when required.
This role requires flexibility to accept reasonable alterations and additional tasks as necessary. Effective communication and management skills are essential to provide leadership and direction within your area of responsibility.
Experience
Experience in a supervisory role within waste management is required. Proven ability to manage staff and resources effectively is essential.

Qualifications
Must hold a Chartered Institution of Wastes Management waste awareness certificate, Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board (WAMITAB) qualification, relevant City & Guilds qualification or similar. You must attend and pass the HMPS 'Waste Management for Supervisors' course within two years of appointment. Internal applicants promoted to Band 5 first line manager roles are required to complete this qualification as part of their work objectives unless previously completed at an equivalent level.
