About the Role
This is a non-operational role within a secure establishment where you will supervise prisoners working in waste management and recycling environments. You will be responsible for briefing prisoners on their tasks, managing prisoner work parties, and ensuring safe and effective waste collection and disposal. While Specialist Production Instructors deliver formal qualifications and training, you will support prisoners by providing guidance and input into assessments as required. You will maintain high standards of security, hygiene, and workshop discipline, contributing to sentence planning and reducing reoffending. This role requires proactive prisoner management, promoting decency, and applying safer custody practices in compliance with national and local security standards. Duties include supervising prisoner movements, monitoring workshop tools and materials, managing workshop resources, maintaining accurate waste records, and ensuring compliance with health and safety policies. You will also operate radio equipment, escort contractors, and may be required to drive estates vehicles and plant equipment. This is a non-rotational role with workshop and prisoner management responsibilities but no line management duties.

Experience
Experience in manual handling, basic security awareness, and break-away techniques may be beneficial. Basic knowledge of the Waste Hierarchy and understanding of Waste Permits and Exemptions is desirable.

You will be proactive, responsible, and able to build effective and supportive relationships with prisoners. You must be committed to maintaining high standards of security, safety, and hygiene. Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team are essential. You should be able to manage multiple tasks, maintain accurate records, and comply with health and safety regulations including COSHH. Confidence in using IT, basic maths, and English skills are required.
