Graduate Placement Assistant Technical Officer


Location
Central London with some travel to other areas in Scotland likely, following Community Energy Scotland’s environmental policy to keep our carbon footprint down.
Hours
Full Time/Part Time Post - open to part-time hours from a minimum of 28 hours up to full-time at 35 hours per week.
Salary
£28,330 per annum (pro rata for part-time hours)
About the Role
Community Energy Scotland is recruiting an energetic, well-organised and self-motivated individual to join our Technical Team as a Graduate Placement Assistant Technical Officer. You will deliver the technical aspects of several CES projects, receiving training, personal development opportunities, and support throughout your placement. Working as part of a technical team, you will provide practical and technical support for community energy project development across a portfolio of innovative projects and research activities. These include renewable electricity generation, low carbon heat, sustainable transport, smart energy systems, and building fabric improvements.
Main tasks will vary depending on current projects and your skillset but may include:
- Carrying out options appraisals and analysis of the technical and financial feasibility of energy projects
- Advising on technical systems and solutions for projects
- Assessing planning, technical, and spatial constraints related to renewable energy developments
- Providing technical analysis of demand and generation profiles and opportunities for integrating renewable energy sources with local loads
- Offering technical support and advice to community energy groups to further a Just Energy Transition
- Supporting communities with reducing energy costs, increasing energy efficiency, and developing low-carbon local transport projects
- Assisting communities in setting up local energy clubs
- Creating viable financial models for investment in energy distribution infrastructure and new business models for energy delivery
- Delivering framework and metrics, baselining, gap analysis, and data collection for carbon audits
- Conducting ground truthing to ensure carbon audits accurately reflect emissions across Scottish communities
- Monitoring energy and gathering baseline data on energy demand and generation, analysing data using statistical and innovative methods
- Coding computer scripts to work with live data streams and build data pipelines, including customisation for data formatting and statistics generation
- Supporting the Head of Development with technical inputs for bids and project proposals
- Assisting the CES (Trading) team in delivering innovation advice and consultancy to clients
- Supporting the development of an innovation knowledge centre within CES, including a project database and toolkit for innovation options.
Experience
Experience is not explicitly required; however, an energetic, well-organised, and self-motivated approach is essential. Experience or interest in renewable energy, technical analysis, data handling, or community energy projects would be advantageous.

You should be enthusiastic, proactive, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn new technical skills including data analysis and coding are important. A commitment to supporting community energy initiatives and a Just Energy Transition is essential.
Qualifications
A relevant degree or qualification in engineering, environmental science, energy, or a related technical discipline is desirable but not mandatory. Training and personal development opportunities will be provided by Community Energy Scotland to support your growth in the role.
